I found a way to celebrate my makers and givers, bring awareness to the healing power of art and just have some fun on a Sunday away from work and church and home chores.
Murray park was the back drop of my younger years. We celebrated my granny T's birthday there, I'm pretty sure a Gillen reunion was held there a time or two. Cousins and then cousins kids had a place to play and picnic tables were plentiful.
Technology and generosity helped me secure pavilion #1 at Murray park in SLC for the Sunday after Pioneer Day. I have it from 8am to 10pm. Woohoo!!
The last time I spent time at this park was when I worked at an arts based treatment center for teen girls. We spent a sunday at this park making art at the pavilion. I'm talking about chalk and charcoal (the chalk that stays around a while) life size drawings and words all over the cement under our feet and the side posts holding up the canopy. (I know I have pictures somewhere) One of my many memorizing moments with these girls. One of the sparks that led to me creating the CARE Alliance.
I digress..
I will have some public art to work on during the day - a canvas banner, maybe a wooden one and some CARE packages to paint. All will be welcome to come put their mark on the ART HEALS mural and/or paint some canvas bags.
I will have journals to collage, patches to stitch, bracelets to string beads on, mantra magnets to paint, canvas bags for your own healing art...some creativiTEA bags, tea and tea towels to paint and/or stitch.
All for FREE oh FREE FREE. That's how non profit works..give til it hurts.
There will be some healing art kits and some pretty things for sale on a donation basis. Think of it like tithing. We are doing this on a sunday and all.
I mostly just want to see my peeps, meet some new peeps, make some art, drink some tea and bring awareness to the ways expressive art heals in the coolest ways. I'm inviting some organizations to stop by to see if this is something they'd like at their event or group meets. That is a little scary putting myself out there to the unknown but someone said "we can do hard things" and I'm taking someone up on that.
The art making and tutorials will be from 9-5. I'm planning on a BYOB/L/D (bring your breakfast, lunch or dinner) type deal as there are picnic tables and people need to eat. There are many food spots on the way to Murray park.
I hope someone brings me a cookie from the sweet lady who sells German sweets at the Wheeler Farmer's Market that day. Food trucks over there too so make a damn day of it!
The more I prepare, the more excited I am. I see doing this on a regular basis so I want this first one to be solid. peace, love and light - tori
